Thabo Bester is a South African convicted murderer and rapist whose prison escape made international headlines. In May 2022, he staged his own death by setting a fire inside his cell at the Mangaung Correctional Centre, leading authorities to initially believe he had died. Bester remained a fugitive for nearly a year before being captured in Arusha, Tanzania, on April 8, 2023.
